Episode #6 of 59 | Passer domesticus

That little brown bird at every gas station, parking lot, and backyard feeder? Most people glance past it. Learn these five marks and you'll never misread it again.
Card 1 — Perched Profile Male: gray crown, broad chestnut eye-stripe, solid black bib, white cheek patch, streaked chestnut back, gray rump. Female: buffy supercilium, plain face, streaked brown back, no bib. Body 5.9–6.7 in (15–17 cm) | Wingspan 7.5–9.8 in (19–25 cm) | Weight 0.85–1.39 oz (24–39 g).
Card 2 — Flight View Short rounded wings and a compact oval body silhouette. Brownish dorsal surface with a pale buff wing-bar, gray rump flashing in flight. Undulating, fast direct flight path — no gliding, no hovering. Tail short, no white edges.
Card 3 — Song & Calls Primary song: a monotonous series of "cheep" or "chirrup" notes, repeated flatly — mnemonic "cheep-cheep, cheep-cheep". No melodic variation. Contact call: sharp single "cheep." Alarm: soft churring rattle. Flock chatter: continuous overlapping chirps near nest cavities. Pitch 2–4 kHz, medium-high, year-round vocalist.
Card 4 — Look-Alike Comparison

The most overlooked bird in North America has five field marks that make it instantly sortable.
Gray crown. Black bib. White cheek — no spot. That's your male House Sparrow in three points.
Female is trickier: buffy eyebrow stripe, plain face, streaked brown back. No bib, no drama. She's the one people spend the most time mis-IDing.
Swipe to see flight silhouette, the "cheep" spectrogram, and the three species that trip people up most.
